Why Peace Education Matters
Inclusion constitutes one of the six core dimensions of the European Education Area (EC, 2020), established by the European Commission to strengthen cooperation and ensure the development of a more cohesive, equitable, and high-quality education system across Europe.
Peace education represents a structured and transformative pedagogical approach designed to cultivate tolerance, empathy, mutual respect, and intercultural understanding. It plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of individuals and societies by equipping learners with the competencies necessary for constructive conflict resolution, respect for diversity, and peaceful coexistence.
The 2015 Paris Declaration on Promoting Citizenship and the Common Values of Freedom, Tolerance, and Non-Discrimination through Education highlights the central role of education in preventing marginalization, countering radicalization, and strengthening social cohesion.
By integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies, peace education fosters emotional regulation, empathy, resilience, and effective communication β essential not only for academic achievement but also for lifelong learning and active citizenship.
